Madrid: Renowned Spanish football icon Andres Iniesta has joined the chorus of disapproval against Luis Rubiales, the president of Spain's football federation, asserting that Rubiales' forced kiss with Jenni Hermoso following the women's World Cup final was "damaging the image" of Spanish football.

Iniesta, known for his historic goal against the Netherlands in the 2010 men's World Cup final, expressed his dismay over recent events surrounding Spanish football and the women's national team. He took to his social media platforms to convey his sentiments, mentioning his role as a father, husband, and football enthusiast.

The incident in question involved Luis Rubiales kissing Jenni Hermoso on the lips after the Spanish women's national team's victory over England in the final. Hermoso later clarified that she did not give consent for the kiss, leading to significant backlash. Rubiales described the kiss as "mutual, euphoric and consensual."

Hermoso, along with 80 other Spain players, declared their decision not to play for the national team until there is a change in "leadership." Numerous members of the women's team's coaching staff also offered their resignations in protest.

Andres Iniesta lamented the unfortunate turn of events that overshadowed the team's achievements. He criticized Rubiales for not admitting his behavior was unacceptable and emphasized the negative impact it has on Spain's reputation in the global football community.

In a subsequent development, FIFA suspended Rubiales for 90 days pending disciplinary proceedings. This move by FIFA has escalated matters further, and additional complications are anticipated as the Spanish administrative court for sport (TAD) is expected to convene to address the government's request to suspend Rubiales from his presidential duties on grounds of "very serious offenses," "abuse of authority," and actions undermining "sporting dignity or decorum."

Spain's Minister for Sport, Miquel Iceta, stated that they will seek an immediate suspension of Rubiales if the TAD supports the government's complaint, potentially extending beyond FIFA's 90-day suspension. The ongoing controversy continues to cast a shadow on Spanish football and its leadership.
